The actual code in kernel-fitimage.bbclass checks if "fitImage" is listed in KERNEL_IMAGETYPES (see e.g. [1]) which is a merge of KERNEL_IMAGETYPE, KERNEL_ALT_IMAGETYPE and KERNEL_IMAGETYPES (see [2]).
