VMware SVGA driver needs to have same depth between the host and the guest. Or put in other word, the depth read by the guest is the value read from host. The guest is not allowed to change virtual depth to other value. With DefaultDepth option xorg.conf, vmware driver rejects to work with suggestion "Please do not specify a depth on the command line or via the config file".
